Microwave Oven While working for the Raytheon Corporation in 1945, Percy Spencer was experimenting with a new type of vacuum tube called the Magnetron. During his experiments one day, Percy noticed a bar of chocolate had melted in his pocket while standing near the Magnetron tubes. After much trial and error in 1947, the first “Microwave” called the Radarange was produced for consumers by the Raytheon Corporation. It went on to become a standard for convenience in counter top kitchen appliances, changing the way and time it took to cook everyday foods and snacks. 4. X-RAY In the late 1800's the world of science had become a seemingly magical place, with endless inventions and possibilities. With the discovery of radio waves, radiation and other unseen forces, it was truly an historical time for all scientists alike. Around this time, scientists had discovered so many mysterious and unseen things. that some started to theorize about ghosts and spirits. Others spent there time working with recent discoveries, trying to improve them or find ways to utilize them. German physicist Wilhelm Rontgen was one of those scientists, tinkering with cathode ray tubes, which are glass vacuum tubes full of different types of gas. One day, Wilhelm was experimenting with some tubes, surrounding them with black cardboard. He noticed a beaker full of lab chemicals glowing across the room, reacting to the cathode ray tubes. Seeing how this new phenomenon could go through paper, wood and even skin, he named it X-Ray, the X was for unknown. Wilhelm later used his discovery to take the worlds first X-Ray image, including a image of his wife's hand wearing a ring. The X-Ray is now a standard tool used in modern medicine practice all over the world. 3. Post-It Notes Well the small yellow note that became essential for many offices around the world wouldn't exists if it weren't for a chemist by the name of Spencer Silver. In 1968, Spencer was working in a lab at 3M trying to develop super strong adhesive for the aerospace industry. Instead he ended up making the exact opposite, a adhesive that was nearly indestructible and would still stick well after several uses. The higher ups at 3M considered Silver's invention useless and saw no purpose for it. Over the next few years, Art Fry and Geoff Nicholson both employees of 3M decided to back the product themselves. They applied the adhesive on small yellow pieces of scrap paper, calling them Post-it Notes. After handing out many samples, 90 percent of the participants wanted more Post-it Notes. Originally made in yellow, since they started by using the scrap paper from a factory next door, Post-it notes now come in almost any color imaginable... And for good reason! 2. Potato Chips Well in 1853 a Hotel Chef named George Crum was going about his day cooking for guests at the Moon Lake House near Saratoga Springs, N.Y. On this particular day, a hard to please guest was constantly complaining about the fried potatoes being to bland and soggy. Mr. Crum sliced the potatoes as thin as he possibly could and cooked them until you could shatter them with a pen. Chef Crum them purposely over salted the potatoes and served him to the guest. To his surprise the customer loved them, even so that he ordered another serving! The word spread and they were deemed at the time “Saratoga Chips”, and later became potato chips which led to a verity of other fried salty snack foods. 1. Silly Putty In fact, its accidental invention by engineer James Wright took place in 1943 during World War II. During that time, rubber was needed to make boots, heavy duty tires, gas masks and other gear for the troops. The Government reached out to scientists and engineers alike for a synthetic rubber solution. Wright gladly stepped up to the plate, eventually mixing boric acid and silicone oil into a tube creating what we now call Silly Putty. Later in 1949 a businessman by the name of Peter Hodgson saw an opportunity in this bouncy stretchy substance. He bought the rights from GE for a mere $147. Hodgson began mass producing the putty which he named “Silly Putty”, putting it in egg shaped containers since it was close to Easter.
